In a cold tent, a researcher measures the density of a block of snow collected from a nearby drift. He is studying an unusual Arctic phenomenon: the disappearance of ground-level ozone and mercury from the air triggered by chemical reactions on the surface of ice and snow during the polar sunrise in spring.
