A researcher hauls snow samples collected from deep pits across a sweeping icefield to a base camp at Mount Oxford on northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. By trapping chemicals and gases in the atmosphere, snow and ice provide a detailed chronological record of ancient atmospheric history and the evolution of the Earth’s climate.
