I am proud that Canada is contributing in an important way to International Polar Year 2007-2008. This is an initiative that is bringing together scientists and participants from all over the world to provide a greater understanding about Arctic issues that concern us all.

The Government of Canada's role in International Polar Year is significant. We are funding 51 research projects focusing on climate change and adaptation and the health and well-being of our Northern communities. We have committed $156 million over six years to support Canada's participation in this international initiative.

Northerners are involved in the many aspects of the IPY Program. They are taking part in science and research activities through training, communications and the coordination of IPY projects. About 60% of IPY projects either involve Canadian participation or take place in Canada's North.

International Polar Year 2007-2008 provides all Canadians with an opportunity to learn more about the North and the people who live there, as well as the importance of the region both nationally and internationally.

I wish to congratulate all of the IPY researchers and Northerners who are contributing to this global initiative. I also encourage all Canadians to learn more about IPY and the many activities and initiatives underway.
